5 Picturesque Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

Grab your family, grab your friends and grab your cameras; the unofficial start to the summer is here! We rounded up our editor’s picks for the top five picture perfect places to go getaway for Memorial Day.
1. Washington, D.C. Memorial Day isn’t just about a long weekend, it’s to remember the brave men and women who lost their lives fighting for our great country. If you want to go full patriotic there is always the National Memorial Day Parade along the national Mall on Monday, May 30, 2016, at 2 pm. What to know: This parade isn’t like anything you’ve ever seen. People dress up in uniforms from the start with the American Revolution all the way to present day. There’s plenty to see and photograph in the district that is a living history lesson.
2. Mackinac Island, Michigan

If you ever want to feel like you are in the middle of a storybook, Mackinac Island is your destination.  Mackinac Island covers nearly 4 square miles and is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac.  Here you’ll see ferry boats, people getting around by horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. Other features include Fort Mackinac and the Grand Hotel that boasts the longest front porch in the world!
3. Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone  is a 3,500-sq.-mile wilderness national park that sits on top of a volcanic hotspot. It’s mostly in Wyoming but stretches into Montana and Idaho. It’s most famous resident is Old Faithful . Old Faithful is a geyser that erupts every 35 to 120 minutes like clockwork. Besides Old Faithful and the beautiful canyons, the park boasts of amazing wildlife including bison! Make sure to bring your zoom lens on this trip to get close to the wildlife, without actually getting close!
4.San Diego

Let’s head to one of California’s best-known vacation destinations, San Diego.  It’s known  for its beautiful beaches and tourist attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Sea World,  Balboa Park and the Belmont Amusement Park. Spend your days at the beach and your nights at the amusement park.  It’s family friendly and gives you plenty of opportunity to grab some amazing pictures along the shoreline.
5. New York City, New York

While some folks prefer to leave the Big Apple during the holiday weekend, we found plenty of great events to make it worth your while to stick around! Of course, you’ll want to visit the main attractions like Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and the Freedom Tower. However, during  May 25-May 31st is Fleet Week.  This is the 28th year and it gives folks the opportunity to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman. According to the website Fleet Week New York.com, you’ll be able to see battle ships docked at several piers including Pier 88S and Pier 92S in Manhattan on Monday.  The best part of this festivity? Most events are free and open to the public.
