We'll be closed for Rosh Hashanah until Thursday morning.

Leshana Tova!

Ingrid

We've teamed up with Eye-Fi!

Hey everyone, In case you haven't heard, AdoramaPix is the newest Eye-Fi print partner! If you use Eye-Fi you can now upload your images directly to AdoramaPix for printing. If you don't have an Eye-Fi, now's the time to get one, Adorama Camera is offering a $20 instant rebate on the Eye-Fi family of products from now till October 4th. Read the entire press release here.

I tried out the Eye-Fi Explore card, which can transfer images using my home Wi-Fi or any Wayport™ Wi-Fi hotspots, such as those found in some McDonald’s restaurants, airports and other locations.

Setting up your computer to use the Eye-Fi reader is a snap. Simply plug the Eye-Fi card reader (with the card inside!) into a USB port on your computer. Your system will recognize the device and before you know it a dialog window appears asking if you want to “Free Your Memories.” Click OK and follow the prompts for installation of the Eye-Fi Manager and configuration of the Eye-Fi card.

When you’ve finished the set up, take the card out of the reader and put it in your camera. The Eye-Fi Manager icon should always be in your task bar to ensure that all new pictures will be received by your system. Also, you may want to change your Eye-Fi settings to change Wi-Fi networks, or to add or change a photo sharing site.

When I tried the Eye-Fi Explore out last week, I was amazed at the speed with which my pictures appeared as thumbnails on the lower right corner of my computer screen. Clicking on the Eye-Fi Manager icon showed the progress of the uploads to my hard drive as well as the images’ status in my Flickr stream and on AdoramaPix. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Your computer doesn’t even have to be on to upload to the web! Those smarties at Eye-Fi are using something called “Smart Boost,” which will automatically send the image files from the camera to Eye-Fi, then to your photo sharing site and then your computer when it *is* turned on. How fast it goes will be determined by how fast your internet connection is. If the computer is on, the card sends the photos there first and then to the photo sharing site from your computer.

Another feature of the Eye-Fi Explore card is the automatic geotagging. I’ve been on Flickr for nearly four years now, so naturally that was my site of choice. Flickr already has geotagging capabilities in place, so as soon as the shots are up, they are geotagged! Visitors to your stream can click to look at a map to see where the images were taken.

I was very impressed with the Eye-Fi Explore’s capabilities and features. It’s easy to install and use, it’s crazy fast and really cool. What more could you want? If you wanna try it, get over to Adorama.com, they’re offering a $20 rebate on all versions of the Eye-Fi from now till October 4th.

See you around!

David Twede’s work is imbued with a sense of spirituality and a “non-ordinary reality” that belies his scientific training and the advanced technology and equipment used to shoot it. You’ll feel like you walked into a dream when you surf over to his websites, http://surrealcolor.110mb.com/ and www.surrealmodels.com. Meet our Customer Profile for this week, David Twede.

How would you describe what kind of a photographer you are?

I’m a “selective-spectrum” photographer. Yes, I made that up, but it does best describe what I am doing. The camera I use captures ultraviolet, visible and infrared (light just beyond human vision). I don’t capture all of it in any given photo, but use specific glass filters to select portions of the UV, vis or IR, depending on the desired outcome. I now have an arsenal of about a dozen “spectral” filters which I use to create various color sets. Four or five filters are special order glass from a laser optics research & development company.

How long have you been photographing and what got you started?

While I’ve only been displaying my work for about three years, I’ve been experimenting with selective-spectrum photography since 2000, when it started as a curiosity and experimental venture. It probably started out of my employment as a scientist. One particular field of science I research, spectral imaging, has influenced how I work with particular filters. At times, I’ve literally plotted the mathematical curves of the spectral response in the camera and in many filters to determine effects before I proceed to shoot. On the other hand, selecting location and scenic organization is driven much more on what I feel and see. Choice of which colors (filters) used to portray a given scene is based on mood and impressions at the moment before I capture the vista.

Best piece of photo advice you ever received?

Don’t worry what other people think of your photos. Worry what the scenes would think about how you portrayed them in the photos.

Your favorite photography quote?

Here’s one that definitely fits me:
An artist uses a lie to tell truths. A politician uses a truth to sell lies. A scientist uses politicians to find knowledge. A photographer uses knowledge to create art.

Where do you live?

Only recently (two months) in Orlando, FL. I started my artistic venture in Colorado Springs, CO.

What do you do for a living?

Scientific research, using lasers and optics.

Tell me something you plan to do today.

I’m prepping a lot of photos to upload for the Adoramapix sale. Can’t pass up on that!

David’s website: www.surrealcolor.com
     and: www.surrealmodels.com

What a scene!

We arrived late Thursday afternoon, after having our flight cancelled on Wednesday evening AND Thursday morning (shout out to Northwest Airlines!) and ended up flying from LaGuardia to Boston, from Boston to Detroit and from Detroit to Grand Rapids. Once we landed and got to the hotel, we headed straight over to the DeVos Convention Center to get started setting up our booth. And when I say get started, I mean completely set up, as we’d lost the whole day thanks to the weather-related flight delays. We stuck our heads into the Cropping Party and saw a roomful of happy scrapbookers, jamming to piped in music and scrapping their hearts out.

Scrapbookers print their images about 5 times more than the average digital photographer and we spent all day Friday talking about our website and product to the many scrappers that stopped by our booth. Everyone was happy to see our prices and loved the look of our papers, especially the Metallic and Silk finish (did you know we’re one of only a handful of labs in the country to offer the silk paper? True!).

We wound up the day with the drawing for the Scrapbooker’s Photo Package. Lucky Mary Scott of Rockford Michigan won 10 12x12 and 50 4x6 prints on her choice of papers. Congrats Mary!

Even though we didn’t get to visit the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library right across the street from the hotel, we still had a great time in Grand Rapids. The downtown area is very clean and quiet and there’s lots of construction going on all over the place.

Our trip home was smooth sailing compared to the way out, so I guess Northwest redeemed themselves. Sort of.

See you around!

We decided to do something, so instead of just a regular old sale, we’re giving away the shipping! From now until July 26th you can get free standard shipping on any order over $10.

Order a few hundred 4x6 prints? Free shipping. Order one 16x20 print on Metallic paper? Oh yes, you get free shipping on that. Order a box of greeting cards? You guessed it, free shipping!

Surf over and get your order in then enter code PXJULFS at checkout to get free shipping on your order of $10 or more!
